A loud howl echoed outside Layton's bedroom, his ear twitched and he curled up on the end of the large bed, trying to ignore it. At the same, he hoped everyone in town was inside their homes, safe from those...creatures roaming outside.

He heard Flora whimper and she pulled the sheets closer to her, obviously a bit timid at the fact that those beast were roaming outside while they sleep. He uncurled himself and crawled over to her, he placed his head next to hers; her eyes were open, he was looking at her as if to say
"Don't be afraid, I'm here." He let out a soft whine
She placed a hand on his head and stroked his soft fur.
"I'm not scared of you...but the other werewolves...I just hope everyone will be safe tonight...and they won't try to come in here, right?"
He nuzzled her to let her know they were safe.
"The professor will keep us safe Flora, he promised he would." Luke said, he was awake as well.
" Are you a little scared of the other werewolves too Luke?" Flora asked as she sat up.
" Co-course not!" Luke exclaimed as he got up. "Why would I , I'm safe with the Professor in here. I'm not sc-scared  of them!"
"I remember you having a...different opinion on them a while back, Luke." Layton stated as he crawled back to the end of the bed. He seem to have a small smile on his face as he sat down.
"Well, I don't th-think there scary anymore...I mean I was scared when I was with you on the night you were bitten...and when you...transformed...but..."
"It's quite alright Luke, I understand. I know you're frightened of the other ones, there's nothing wrong with admitting that. We don't know very much about them other than the one that bit me."
He paused for a moment.
"Tell me, are you still a little frightened of me?"
"Well,I don't think you're scary Professor, honestly." Luke answered .
"I don't think you're frightening at all either, you're too nice." Flora added.
"I'm glad, I need your trust."
Layton's tail started wagging, the kids noticed this.
"Your tail is wagging; a scary werewolf wouldn't wag their tail like you!"
"Is it, now? Honestly I can't help it, it seems to move on its own at times!Quite frankly, I find having a tail...embarrassing."
"I think it's cute when his tail wags."
"Flora please..." Layton was feeling a bit...embarrassed at the moment.
Luke chuckled
"Werewolves aren't supposed to be like big friendly dogs like you Professor, they're messy, snarly, slobbery, and they bite and claw at everything . Their eyes become all yellow and mean looking and stuff."
"You just look cute and cuddly and soft." Flora giggled.
"Really? A big cute friendly dog?"
"It better than being scary, besides, if you ended up looking like the wolfman, you would just look silly. You would be all hairy and funny looking than scary with you still wearing your clothes and running around like a wolf."
Layton snorted at Luke's response in a jokingly manner.
"And you wouldn't be able to use your hands as a normal looking wolf."
Layton then looked down at his hands at Luke's statement. He looked back at the kids again in a curious manner.
"So,not even my claws and fangs scare you?"
"No, I know you would never hurt us with your claws and fangs. Again you're not scary at all Professor."
"Oh really? What if I raised my hands like this and showed my teeth like this?"
In a playful manner, he raised his hands out with his claws pointed out and showed his fangs in a non-threatening way. He then grabbed both kids and pulled them towards him, hugging them tightly. They both giggled as Layton closed his eyes in bliss and chuckled to himself.
Some time passed before Luke asked.
"Professor?"
"Hm?"
"How come in the stories, the people that the werewolf cares about turn their backs on them instead of helping them and why do some enjoy being a
werewolf?"
"I have no idea why anyone would be happy to cursed to transform into a beast everyone fears. And for the first question...well...their obviously afraid and they don't know how to help them, they're all in fear for their lives because the werewolf might bring harm to them or a mob might attack them for helping a werewolf, they maybe dangerous as one but abandoning or turning their back on them when they want help won't make it better for anyone. The curse does make everyone suffer in more ways than one in the end as I said before."
"Oh..."
"What did he say?"
Luke repeated to Flora to what the Professor told him. The two stayed quite for awhile.

Flora began to pet Layton then...she started to scratch his belly.
"What are you doing...?"
"Do werewolves like their belly scratched like friendly dogs?" She asked.
Layton left leg started to move up and down like a dog's. Luke moved out of Layton's way as he slowly fell to his right with his belly still being scratched. Clearly embarrassed of what was happening.
"You do like it! You're even doing the leg thing!" Flora giggled.
"I can't help it, it's a reflex for canines really. Now please..."
"I wonder if you like being scratched behind the ears too." Luke said as he started scratching his head. Layton did liked being scratched as it felt nice but he was quite embarrassed of how he was reacting.
"Come on you two, please stop that..."
I did this for a friend who was feeling down.

I like layton being a father figure/ parent/ friend towards the kids.
