Luke and Flora noticed a shadowy figure was waiting patiently outside the Study (the study room was on the highest floor of the mayor’s mansion) room’s windows as it rained; it looked like a large wolf.

“It’s probably the professor.” Luke stated; it was dark inside the room. “We should tell him about what we discovered tonight.” Luke put his bag back over his shoulder as he now had the important clue inside it; and headed towards the windows. But as Luke approached the windows, he was met with a low rumbling growl. Luke stopped where he was, startled; on closer inspection, he could see its yellow glowing eyes, and its fur looked grey instead of brown…

Luke backed away until he was next to Flora.

“F-Flora?”

“Ye-Yes?”

“It’s not the professor.”

The werewolf bared its fangs; the two froze in fear. Its growling then became a loud roar and crashed through one of the windows and landed on all fours in the room; shaking the rain off its body. It snarled viciously at them as they trembled at the sight of it. It approached them slowly, menacingly, like it was hunting them.

“Luke, we should run…” Flora whispered.

“Uh…Yes, of course!”

The beast leapt at them but they dodged out of the way, causing it to crash into one of the book shelves. They made a break for the door, but the beast managed to recover in time to jump in front of it, blocking their way.

The beast gave chase after them around the room, keeping them away from the door at the same time. The beast then suddenly pounced on Luke, pinning him to the floor. Luke whimpered as he was face to face with the werewolf, it snarled, showing its razor fangs; slowly opening its jaws to go in for the fatal bite.

“You leave him alone!”

The wolf was suddenly hit across the face with a rather large book, causing it to yelp and growl in surprise. Luke looked to his right and saw Flora holding a dictionary. It glared at her and abandoned its focus on Luke. Flora ran towards the door but the wolf grabbed her and pinned her back against the door. Luke got up to his feet and ran to her aid.

“Let go of her!” he cried as he began to punch the wolf in the back repeatedly. The werewolf responded by turning around, picking the boy up, and throwing him against the wall left of the door in one fast move.

“Luke, NO!” Flora cried, Luke was barely awake, feeling a bit sore, but uninjured. The creature turned back to Flora and opened its jaws, she screamed.

Suddenly, another large figure burst through the windows, it quickly got onto two legs after landing, and glared at the grey werewolf, snarling much louder than it, the figure rushed towards the grey werewolf and grabbed it away from Flora, turned it around, and roared loudly and angrily in its face before tossing it towards the other end of the room, away from the kids. The beast lied still.

Flora stood there, stunned by the turn of events. The beast walked away from her to shake the rain off of its body before returning back to face her, it no longer appeared enraged, it looked…worried and sad…it was the professor.

“Pro-Professor, it’s you!” she ran up and hugged him out of relief; his fur still a bit wet from the rain. He placed a gentle hand on her back and whined softly. She heard him sniffing around her and knew what he was trying to do.

“Oh, I’m not hurt, but Luke…” She pointed to Luke, still lying against the wall. He got on fours and scampered to his aid.

“Luke? Luke, wake up…” he said as he nudge the boy with his muzzle. Luke blinked and groaned, and stared into the wolf’s face.

“Professor!” he exclaimed and hugged Layton’s face; Flora now sat next to Luke. The moment did not last long, as Luke heard the professor starting to growl and let go out of fear.

“I’m sorry for that…” He apologized, his ears twitched and flattened. “Stay here.”

Layton spun around and crept slowly away from them, snarling loudly. The other werewolf had gotten back up and was more furious than ever. Layton stayed where he was and continued to snarl as he watched the other wolf come closer, snarling back at him. Layton stood his ground, his fur stood on his back, his head lowered, his fangs bared, his tail swishing, claws digging into the floor, he was going to protect the children at all cost. The beast charged towards him but he charged towards and halted it as the two glared each other down while having a snarling match.

What Layton said next startled Luke, as he almost never heard the professor speak in such a harsh tone before

“DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH THEM!” he hissed as he snarled.

The beast attempted to lunge at the children but Hershel charged into him and soon both were fighting with each like savage animals as they snapped, snarled, clawed and tore at each other. The kids stayed huddled together as they watched the werewolves viciously battling around the room.  Whenever they caught a glimpse of the professor’s face, it looked…more like a crazed wild animal, believing for a moment that he might possibly lose his mind in the battle. But knew that wouldn’t happen…when Layton managed to pin the beast down, he kept its head down by putting one hand on its face and yelled

“Get out of here while you can! Go on!”

“But, what about you professor?” Luke asked.

“Don’t worry about me! Just get you and Flora out of here at once, Hurry!”

“Come on Flora, let’s go!” and both ran out the door, unsure what would happen to their friend.

Time passed, the two had returned, waiting outside the study. They were unsure if the professor was still alive.

Luke knocked on the door.

“Professor, Are you still there, are you alright?”

A loud whine and groan answered him. He opened the door and peeked inside, in the middle of the study lied a wounded brown wolf, the grey one was nowhere in sight.

“PROFESSOR!” Luke yelled in a saddened voice.

Both kids ran to his aid; he was breathing weakly, his wounds staining his fur; he appeared to be twitching at points.

“Professor, please…don’t…”Flora trailed off.

“It’s alright…” Layton winced “The other wolf ran off and left me for dead, but I’m not going to die…I’m just worn out right now, I’m going to fine.”

“But you’re really hurt…you might…” Luke broke in to tears as he buried his face into Hershel’s wolf face, cradling it as well.

“I don’t want to see you like this either…” Flora sobbed as she buried her face into Layton’s torso.

He closed his eyes.

“Shhh…I’m going to be alright, don’t cry, I don’t want to make you cry.” Layton said as he tried to hush them. But he knew it would not do much. He sighed, even though he was in a bit of pain, he would rather be the one injured than the kids; he did not like fighting like that, but he knew it was all he could do at the time to keep the children safe.
I wrote another scene, this one has Layton protecting the kids

You know, protecting one's Pack is also a wolfish instinct. Perhaps, Layton unintentionally imprinted upon Luke & Flora. Now, because of this, the wolf inside recognizes them as his Cubs & thus, are to be protected at all costs. Do you think this could help explain why Layton finds it so easy to remain calm around them, as well as, his uncharacteristic outburst when their safety is threatened?
Just a theory.
